A vital part of the mission and vision of
Opera Providence, OPERAtunity is dedicated to educating people of all
ages about opera and making the art form accessible to all audiences.
Through education and outreach programs, Opera Providence raises awareness
of and exposure to opera, educating, inspiring, and cultivating the next
generation of opera supporters.
OPERAtunity
brings learning programs to the community and arts integration programs to a
diverse school-based population, including Rhode Island's core urban
districts as well as students in suburban and rural settings. OPERAtunity
provides main-stage, in-school and community performances,
artist-in-residence, after school and enrichment programs, and
cross-collaborations with other nonprofit organizations. The National
Endowment for the Arts has awarded funding to support OPERAtunity
artist-in-residence programs for the 2004-05 school year. OPERAtunity
programs are also on the education roster for the Rhode Island State Council
on the Arts.
Since 1998, OPERAtunity has served more
than 30,000 children, youth, and adults throughout Rhode Island.
OPERAtunity
programs combine music, theater, dance,
history, and humor, providing the audience with an enriching introduction to
opera, classical music, and operetta. Each interactive performance program
utilizes professional singers with costumes and props in staged scenes from
opera and operetta. Schools participating in the OPERAtunity
program have the opportunity to see OP's main-stage opera performance during
a special matinee. Over the past four years, the performances that have been
presented to nearly 7,500 students in grades 4-12 are La Bohème, Carmen,
Madama Butterfly, Cinderella, Gershwin's American folk opera
Porgy and Bess, and Opera2Broadway.
In spring 2003, Opera Providence was featured
at the PPAC Fleet Arts Showcase with a performance of the comic opera
Everybody Does It - Cosi!, based on Mozart's opera, Cosi fan tutte.
At this year's PPAC Fleet Arts Showcase, OP presents Opera2Broadway
for 2000 middle school students. Hosted by the Phantom of the Opera, this
exciting show illustrates the influence of Opera on Broadway with excerpts
from both genres.
Programs have been presented in the community
and in collaboration with other non-profit organizations, including: RISD
Museum, Providence Children's Museum, Newport & Providence Learning
Connection, 4H Club, Girl Scouts of RI, Childspan, PPAC Fleet Arts Showcase,
The Meeting Street Center, Hasbro Children's Hospital, Trudeau Vocational
Center, The RI Youth Guidance Center, EDC SmART Schools project and the WSNE
Kids Fair at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
